We are actually on our last excursion for the trip, which was a bus trip of hour and half along motorways to lovely seaside town of Averdina. Sea -side as in the actual sea was 50 km away and there was 50km of wetlands, swamp and mud. This town was based on the river mouth orgionally where the rive meets the estuary? (if you can call it that!) They made large canals of the river and made locks holding the tide back from from the wetlands and so this town was created. It is called 'Little Venice' to sell it to the tourists but in fact has only 4 canals. Our tour guide said the name was an insult to the real Venice and I have to agree with him! It was however a well-preserved Art Deco town and thriving and growing in hotels. I loved the buildings with their architecture.
Part of the trip was to go on a 'gondala' ride, which was really a cool boat that looked like a big gondala and run by motor! It was a warm, sunny day so was pleasant to be on a boat.Obviously there were lots of bridges of different types over the canals.
These new hotels were made to be shaped like a bow of a boat.
They called these bridges friendship bridges where people had hung streamers over them.
Us with Stuart and Annie - part of our six group, from Melbourne and so lovely!
