Berwick upon Tweed

After Edinburgh we went back to the airport and picked up another rental car to drive the next few days across and down the island to London.
Our first stop was about an hour away down the east coast. Berwick upon Tweed is  a lovely coastal town that we thought we could walk along the beaches, check out the marina etc.Big Mistake!!
We arrived in rain and fog! couldnt see a thing.
The worse part was, we were staying at a 'country house' type of hotel about 2km away, set in 18 acres of land and woodlands. Sounds nice? Well, first of all we couldn't see it!, (the fog was that bad - and it was only 4pm) the second problem was it reminded Dave of Fawltey Towers! he just kept on laughing! esp. as it had a Basil type owner, a Sybil behind the desk, the maid???? but no Manuel!

The place wasn't bad at all. Narrow staircases and a little bar etc.
It did have a farm as part of its grounds, and as we were driving in through the fog I looked by the fence and said to Dave "oh my god, there's a baby hippo!" He slams on the brakes and it took off.
The next day, when it was fine we saw it again so I took a photo. It would have to be the most ugliest sheep I have ever seen!

We went for a drive after settling in, in the fog, to find the sea. What we found was battlement walls . (it was a castle town app.) no beach, but lots of stormy sea smashing up against the walls. Very wild and woolly, but also wet and windy! So our visit to the sea lasted 5 min, drove through the town, in the fog, and back to the hotel. In the mean time there had been a smash on the road (surprise, surprise) so we had to convince the police officer standing across the road in the driving rain, that we really needed to get up that road to get to our hotel a little way up! We must've looked desperate, cause he let us. So that was the end of Berwick upon Tweed!
Dinner at the hotel was yummy, ( I had huge prawns from the North Sea with eyes and nippers still intact! Dave had to dissect them for me - not like Taupo Prawn farm at all.) There was a log fire going and all very warm and cosy. (remember this is summer!)

The next day, we set off early as it was going to be a long one.
We stopped off at a castle we saw from the train going up many moons ago. You could see these ruins set on an island with houses very close by on land. I was curious so said we had to go there.
Well, firstly it wasn't a castle, it was a priory (church monestry) in ruins perched on top of high rocks.
You had to drive along a cause way ( a road which goes under water at high tide!) to get to a town and leave your car and then walk a mile to get there. A whole mile! so we walked a little way and took pictures. I was being lazy OK?!

After that we continued driving down the coast till we came to ........ (see next post!)
